Media conference in Diyarbakir

SoME Gavobevis 2023

27 April 2017

The weekend of April 29-30, our partner organization Gazete Şujin will hold a conference in Turkey on women’s participation in media and women’s rights in war and conflict.  Journalists from various media actors in Turkey will attend, and is held in the city of Diyarbakir in the southeast of Turkey.

Despite strong restrictions on freedom of expression in Turkey, there are people who fight for their right to express themselves. Those who do not give up, despite security threats and the risk of getting jailed. Those who even want to change power structures from its very foundation and stand up for equality between women and men, and who stand for the right to tell their own story. Operation 1325 is proud to work with Gazete Şujin.

During the conference, participating journalists will receive information on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security to raise awareness amongst readers and to create opinion. A lecture on peace journalism will be held by a media professor and information about journalists’ rights and freedom of expression will be given by a lawyer. To create a change in the male-dominated language use in the media, Gazete Şujin will hold a full-day workshop on reporting news events from women’s perspective.

Gazete Şujin is a feminist news agency based in Diyarbakir, in southeastern Turkey. Gazete Şujin works against sexsim, militarism and patriarchal structures by highlighting women’s experiences from war and conflict through media. They write without thinking about what men will say.

Within our joint project Women Participation through Media, conferences, meetings and exchange of knowledge will take place between various media actors in Turkey in 2017. The project aims to increase knowledge about women’s rights, with focus on women’s rights in war and conflict.
