How can Sweden work for the implementation of Resolution 1325 in Libya?

SoME Gavobevis 2023

2 December 2020

To contribute to the implementation of Resolution 1325, we have, alongside our partner organizations in the MENA region, produced recommendations on how Sweden can contribute to the Women, Peace and Security agenda in different countries. Now the turn has come to Libya and together with our local partner organization Elidia we present the following recommendations.

Since the outbreak of armed conflict in Libya in 2011, women have been excluded from both formal and informal peace talks.

The war has also led to women being more exposed to violence and harassment both online and off-line and several prominent women’s rights activists have been killed.

Female migrants and refugees are kept in detention camps, where they risk being sexually abused.

Our Recommendations:

  • Stand up for women’s participation in all peace negotiations.
  • Protect women from military and gender-based violence – online and off-line.
  • Ensure that women on the run in Libya have access to protection.
