People are suffering from continued violence as parties to the ongoing conflict in Yemen have not come to a negotiated agreement. The consequences of the conflict are further complicated by economic factors and the lack of sanitation and food resources. An outbreak of cholera and loss of livelihood are increasing the suffering for civilians.
Last week the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen Ismail Ould Alshaikh briefed the Security Council on the situation in Yemen. Civil society is playing a vital role in bringing an end to the conflict and pushing the agenda of peace. Under our project Mediation Lab we have had the opportunity to support a Yemeni civil society organization, which has successfully informed the UN Special Envoy of their efforts to encourage the resumption of peace talks. These efforts include the objective of increasing women’s participation and working towards the implementation of resolution 1325.
